Key Points to Remember - Reputable Web Sites

Author/ Creator

  • Is the author or creator of the site easily identifiable?

  • Do the authors provide evidence (such as their education, experience or occupation) to let you know that they are experts on the site's topic?  If not, can you google the author and find a biography that tells you what they have done to make them an expert on the topic?

  • Is the author qualified to be considered an expert on the topic?

Content

  • Do you see spelling and grammatical errors?

  • Does the author provide a Works Cited page or a bibliography do you verify that the resources the author consulted are reliable, thorough, and objective?

  • Does the site feature graphics, video and audio clips, or animations? Do these multimedia elements help explain or clarify the site's topic?

  • Can you verify the information in another source (another website, book, prior knowledge)?

Currency

  • Is the web site kept up to date?

  • Can you easily find a date when the site was last updated?

  • If there are links on the website, are they active or "dead" (the pages are no longer there)?

Purpose

  • Who is the intended audience of the website?

  • Is the site intended to educate?  Explain?  Persuade?  Sell?

  • Are advertisements clearly identified?

  • Is the website full of facts or opinions?
